On the Record [http://on-the-record.org.uk] is very pleased to announce that we’ve been awarded funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a new project: ‘A Hackney Autobiography: Remembering Centerprise’. We are advertising for volunteers and are looking for people who remember Centerprise to get involved.

To find out more about volunteering please see:

and note that applications close on January 7th 2015 at 5 pm.

Centerprise:

Centerprise was a groundbreaking community centre in Hackney that opened in 1971. It hosted a bookshop, publishing project, reading centre, café, youth club, creche and more all under one roof in Dalston. In the 1970s and 1980s it was not only a place to buy books, it made it possible for local people to write and publish their own works of poetry, autobiography and history.

From now until June 2016 A Hackney Autobiography: Remembering Centerprise will record and remember the history of Centerprise’s work by recording oral history interviews, gathering a permanent archive about Centerprise and running free workshops and events.

Contact us [info@on-the-record.org.uk] if you would like to get involved by:

  • Being interviewed about your memories of Centerprise
  • Donating to the archive
  • Joining the project steering group
  • Volunteering: we have many opportunities throughout the project including research, interviewing and archiving. Read our volunteer advert at:
